"Up to" decoded: how to read prop firm headline numbers
Up to $4M. Up to 100%. Up to 90% off. Prop firm headlines are ceilings, not typical outcomes. Here is how to translate each one into what you actually buy.

Almost every prop firm leads with a big number: funding in the millions, a split near 100%, a discount that looks too good to skip. Two small words usually sit in front of it — "up to".
That phrase is not a lie, but it is a ceiling. This explainer shows how to translate the three most common headline numbers into the figure that applies to your account, using firms we track.
1. "Up to $X million" funding
A multi-million headline is rarely the size of a single account you can buy. It is usually one of two things:
- A scaling ceiling — reachable only after repeated profitable payout cycles. FTMO's individual account tops out at $200K, with its Scaling Plan going up to $2M. FundedNext caps a CFD funded account at $300K, with scaling up to $4M.
- A multi-account total — several accounts added together. Alpha Capital Group sells up to $200K per account with a $400K total allocation across accounts. City Traders Imperium sells $2,500–$100,000 per account; its "up to $4M" is a scaling/multi-account headline.
What to check: the largest single account you can purchase today, and the exact conditions for each scaling step. Our scaling plans explainer covers how those steps work.
2. "Up to 100%" profit split
A top-tier split is normally gated behind a product, a payout cadence, a tier or a paid add-on:
- FundingPips pays 100% only on a 30-day cycle; weekly payouts are 60% and bi-weekly 80%.
- Upcomers advertises up to 99%, verified at 99% on its Thunderbolt funded product rather than across every line.
- Top One Trader lists up to 90%, with its Two-Step PRO reaching "up to 100%" with add-ons.
- The5ers starts at 80% and scales toward 100% as the account grows.
What to check: the split on day one of the exact plan you would buy, and what you must do (or pay) to move up. See profit splits explained for more.
3. "Up to X% off" discounts
Sitewide promotions are common — "up to 60%" or "up to 90%" off banners appear regularly. The "up to" usually means the deepest cut applies only to certain sizes or models, and promo pricing changes often.
What to check: the final total at checkout for your chosen size, including any add-ons, and whether the discount applies to resets or only first purchases. We never publish codes; compare base prices on /compare/accounts and confirm the total on the firm's own checkout.
How we handle headline figures
On every firm dossier, we tag facts as verified (confirmed on a firm primary source), advertised (headline or "up to" framing) or unverified. That separation is deliberate: the advertised number tells you what is possible; the verified number tells you what is documented.
A quick translation routine before you buy:
- Rewrite every "up to" figure as "starting at ___" and fill in the blank from the rules page.
- Note what unlocks the next tier — time, payouts, consistency, or money.
- Check whether the number refers to one account or many.
- Look up unfamiliar terms like scaling plan or consistency rule in our glossary.
Key takeaways
- "Up to" figures are maximums, not typical outcomes.
- Multi-million funding headlines usually mean scaling ceilings or multi-account totals.
- Top profit splits are commonly gated by payout cycle, tier, product or add-ons.
- Discounts vary by size and change often — judge by the checkout total.
- Compare the starting terms of the plan you would actually buy.
This article is educational and is not investment advice. Prop firm evaluations are paid products with no guaranteed outcome, and funded accounts at most firms are simulated. Rules change — always confirm current terms on the firm's own site.
