A vendor-neutral framework

How to choose a prop firm for automation

Six questions that most often decide whether a strategy is allowed. Confirm each against the firm’s own terms.

  • Fully autonomous, or an assistant?

Some firms allow only EAs that support manual decisions, not end-to-end bots.

  • Can you prove you own the strategy?

Many require owning the source / explaining the logic; black-box "prop-pass" bots are widely banned.

  • Copy trading across accounts?

Usually allowed only between your own accounts — never between different people.

  • Does your edge rely on speed?

HFT, latency arbitrage and often tick scalping are banned across the board.

  • What happens around news?

Rules vary — some bar trading in a window around high-impact events.

  • Is the platform permitted for automation?

A firm offering MT5 may still ban automated execution. Match policy, not just platform.

Platforms for running automated strategies

What each platform is typically used for. Capability ≠ permission — confirm the firm’s policy.

MetaTrader 4 / 5

Most common EA environment (MQL4/MQL5). MT5 restricted for US clients at several firms.

cTrader

cBots in C# / Python via cTrader Automate. Offered by some CFD firms alongside MT5.

Futures platforms

NinjaTrader, Tradovate, Rithmic. Automation-capable, but several futures firms ban it.

An EA-capable platform doesn’t mean automation is allowed — confirm the policy for your exact product.

Common questions

AI & algo prop-trading FAQ

Which prop firms allow fully automated EAs?
Among the firms we review, E8 Markets, FTMO and Funded Trading Plus are the most permissive toward Expert Advisors and standard automated strategies (each still bans HFT, arbitrage and exploitative tactics). Others — including Blueberry Funded, BrightFunded, City Traders Imperium, Crypto Fund Trader, Fintokei, For Traders, FundedNext, The5ers, Top One Trader, Topstep, Upcomers, Alpha Capital Group and FundingPips — allow EAs only under conditions such as proving you own the EA, customising it to a unique strategy, paying an EA fee, or limiting it to your own accounts. Always confirm the rule for the exact product you buy.
Do any prop firms allow AI trading bots?
It depends on what "AI bot" means. Firms that welcome EAs generally allow bots that run a genuine, trader-owned strategy you created, adjusted and tested yourself. What is widely banned is black-box or mass-distributed "prop-pass" bots, and AI/ultra-high-speed tools used to gain an unfair advantage or exploit the simulated environment. Some firms — Alpha Capital Group, Apex Trader Funding, Maven Trading and Take Profit Trader — ban automated execution entirely and require manual trading.
Which prop firms allow copy trading?
Copy trading between accounts you personally own is permitted by many firms (for example Blueberry Funded, E8 Markets, BrightFunded, City Traders Imperium, Crypto Fund Trader, For Traders, FundedNext, Top One Trader, Topstep, Upcomers, Apex Trader Funding and Take Profit Trader, each with their own conditions). Copying between accounts owned by different people — including relatives or friends — is almost universally banned, as is having a third party manage or trade your account. FTMO, Funded Trading Plus, Fintokei, The5ers, Alpha Capital Group, FundingPips and Maven Trading prohibit copy trading with other traders outright.
Can I run high-frequency trading (HFT) or tick scalping at a prop firm?
Generally no. Every firm we review prohibits HFT, latency arbitrage and similar exploitative tactics, and most also ban tick scalping (often defined as very short average hold times). These rules exist to protect the simulated trading environment. If your edge depends on sub-second execution or exploiting price-feed latency, prop challenges are not a fit.
What platforms can I run automated strategies on?
It depends on the firm and product. MetaTrader 4/5 support Expert Advisors, cTrader supports cBots (C#/Python), and futures firms typically use NinjaTrader, Tradovate or Rithmic. But platform capability does not equal permission: a firm may offer MT5 yet still ban automated execution. Each firm's own platform list and automation rules govern — check the dossier and the firm's terms for your region and product.
