Trading crypto at a prop firm: leverage, weekends and the rules that change
Most CFD prop firms list crypto, but the leverage is often 1:1 or 1:2, weekends work differently, and a few firms are built around crypto entirely. Here is what changes when you trade Bitcoin instead of EUR/USD.

Plenty of prop firms list Bitcoin and Ethereum next to forex pairs. But a crypto trade at a prop firm is not just a forex trade with a different symbol. The leverage is usually far lower. The market never closes. And the same daily loss limit is much easier to hit when price moves 5% in an afternoon.
This neutral explainer uses the firms in our dataset to show what actually changes. Always confirm the current rules for your exact program on the firm's own pages.
1. Crypto leverage is usually tiny
The biggest surprise for most traders is how little leverage crypto gets, even at firms that offer 1:30 or more on forex:
- E8 Markets and FundedNext (on at least one FundedNext plan): crypto at 1:1, against 1:30 on forex.
- The5ers: forex up to 1:100, but crypto at 1:2.
- Blueberry Funded: crypto at 1:2 on every plan we track.
- City Traders Imperium: crypto at 1:2 (we flag this as unverified).
- Top One Trader: crypto at 2:1 or 1:1, depending on the plan.
In practice, a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio caps your position size well before any lot limit does. See our leverage explainer for how these ratios work.
2. Crypto-first firms work differently
A small group of firms is built around crypto rather than adding it as an extra:
- Crypto Fund Trader lists 715 crypto pairs (900+ instruments in total) on MT5, Match-Trader and Bybit. Its Advanced accounts offer up to 1:100 across asset classes, while Student accounts drop crypto to 1:5. It also has a firm-wide $10,000 profit cap per day and per trade, which is worth knowing before you hold a big position through a breakout.
- For Traders runs separate crypto programs (Fast Pro, Instant, Pay After Pass) with 24/7 trading on 70+ crypto symbols. Its funded consistency limits change by program, from 15% on Crypto Instant to 40% on Crypto Pay After Pass.
These firms sit in their own "Crypto-first" group on our firms index.
3. Weekends: the market keeps moving
Forex closes on Friday. Crypto does not. That matters in two ways:
- Holding rules. Crypto Fund Trader and The5ers allow weekend holding, but swap or funding fees still apply. E8's Signature product closes all positions before the weekend, while E8 One and E8 Pro allow holding.
- Drawdown never sleeps. If you hold a crypto position over the weekend, your daily loss limit and maximum drawdown keep counting while you are away from the screen.
More detail is in our news and weekend holding guide.
4. Volatility versus fixed loss limits
Most firms' daily loss limits sit around 4–5% (Crypto Fund Trader's range is 4–5% depending on program). On forex, a 5% move in a day is rare. On mid-cap crypto, it is ordinary. That makes position sizing and stop placement the key to staying inside the rules. Our drawdown explainer covers the mechanics.
5. Paying and getting paid in crypto
This is a separate question from trading crypto. Many firms accept crypto at checkout and some pay out in stablecoins. The details vary, though. For example, The5ers caps crypto withdrawals at $1,500 each, and FTMO's minimum payout is $50 via crypto versus $20 via bank. See our payment methods guide.
What to check before you buy
- The crypto-specific leverage, not the headline forex figure.
- Whether weekend holding is allowed on your product, and what the funding or swap costs are.
- Any per-day or per-trade profit caps and consistency limits on the crypto program.
- Whether bots or EAs are allowed on crypto. See our AI trading hub.
Compare rules side by side on /compare/accounts, and look up any unfamiliar terms in the glossary.
Key takeaways
- Crypto leverage at prop firms is often 1:1–1:2, even when forex gets 1:30 or more.
- Crypto-first firms such as Crypto Fund Trader and For Traders offer much wider crypto coverage, but come with their own profit caps and consistency rules.
- Crypto trades through the weekend, and your loss limits keep counting while it does.
- Check crypto-specific rules for your exact program. This is education, not investment advice, and no outcome is guaranteed.
